Gospel: Matthew 13: 1-23

Seeds do not come free. They are selected and preserved with utmost care. No sensible farmer would waste it. A seasoned farmer knows the field well. He doesn’t come to the field just to sow the seeds; he would oversee preparing the field. When he sees the field is ready for the seeds, he takes the seed basket and begins to sow. If the field is large, he avails the help of his best colleagues to accomplish the job on time. He would not let his precious seeds waisted to feed the birds of the air, nor let it thrown over rocks and among thorns.

But, the sower of the parable is so generous to the point we can call him careless. He does so because we are not inanimate pieces of land. Jesus is talking of human hearts, and their ability to respond to the word of God. Many a hostile piece of land has turned good thanks to shine, shower, and untiring labors. If lifeless pieces of land can change, we too can change and produce better. That is the reason Jesus telling this parable. The word of God is showered without prejudice. If one remains unresponsive, it is by choice.

Midway through the reading, we see Jesus citing the prophet Isaiah, lamenting the people who widely shut their eyes and ears. The prophet is lamenting the people who deliberately shut their eyes and closed their ears so that the word of God does not penetrate into their lives. Jesus is repeating that criticism.

There is hope. We can be different. We can be responsive to the Word of God. If interested you can produce a hundred-fold from now on. Start from receiving the word of God with joy. Help yourself with the Word of God in plenty. It is there at home, on your table or shelf. It is there on your computer and your mobile phone. I am talking of the Bible. Help yourself by reading or listening to the Bible daily. Use any of the media, but help yourself with Bible every day.

The word of God is powerful. It can move mountains. It can turn hostile hearts into welcoming hearts. It can chase away Satan who comes to steal the word of God away. It can crush the stones to fine earth. It can remove the thorns in our hearts. So, help yourself generously with the Bible every day. Read it, listen to it, meditate on it, and pray over it.

Finally, be a colleague to the great sower. He has invited you when he said the harvest is plenty but labors are few. Spread the word of God without any prejudice. Don’t assume that someone is not worthy enough to receive the Word of God. If Saul can become St. Paul, and if Augustine the atheist could become St. Augustine, every man and woman has a chance. There is hope for everyone. Hence, don’t stop helping yourself with the Word of God, start serving the Word of God without any prejudice.

Amen.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel: Matthew 11: 25-30

This Sunday Jesus is inviting us, “Come to me!” It is a gentle invitation; no compulsion is attached. He did not attach any threat to it either. He did not mention punishment for those who rejected his invitation.

Jesus is poor when it comes to marketing. He did not offer any discount on his invitation. There are yokes and burdens attached to his invitation. Although the yoke is easy and the burden is light, they are sure to exist. But he offers good rest to those who accept his invitation. This invitation is not for everyone. The invitation is for those who labor and are burdened.

You are invited by Jesus! You are invited by Jesus if you labor and you are burdened. There is hardly anyone in the church who is not burdened for one or other reason. The children seem burdened since they don’t get enough of their parents. They often don’t get enough attention, care, and love as they expect. They are sad and burdened by that.

The young are burdened by expectations. Students are burdened by assignments and vast portions of study material to finish before graduating. Some carry the yoke of not getting a job, while others can’t meet both ends together with their job. Then there are those who suffer from doing the same boring job over and over again for months and years together. Thus, if unemployment is a heavy yoke, work is a burden for the employed.

There are people who are single and suffer from loneliness. Then there are those who are married and suffer because of their spouses and children. To many, their children are the cause of their suffering. But there are those who suffer terribly for not having the offspring they desired badly.

Not having enough to eat is a heavy yoke upon many. And there are those who suffer from eating too much. Many are burdened by ill health, while the healthy are anxious about losing their health another day.

The poor are burdened for not having enough money to meet the basic needs for themselves and their dependents; while there are the rich who live in the fear of losing their wealth one day.

The causes are different, but there is hardly anyone who is not laden with a burden. If you think you are burdened with anything on earth, the invitation is for you, “Come to me!” It is not an ordinary invitation; it is an invitation by Jesus.

With His arms stretched wide, Jesus is inviting you today, “Come to me!” He has never disappointed anyone who accepted His invitation. Once we respond to His invitation, our burdens become His burden; our labor turns out to be His labor too. Not that our labor or burden vanish, but that Jesus becomes our partner in carrying our burdens.

With Jesus every burden is light, and every yoke is easy. Don’t leave the church without taking Jesus with you! He really wants to come with you! He wants to share your yokes and burdens.

Amen.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Also Read: Mass Readings for 09 July 2023 Homily for 09 July 2023 – Sunday

First Reading: Zechariah 9: 9-10

Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. (9)

Alleluia, we rejoice at our Lord’s imminent arrival! We must also remember that He arrives triumphant yet humbly. Therefore, we will not be discouraged when arrogance seems to rule over us now. Our eyes are fixed on the Blessed Lamb of God!

Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 145: 1-2, 8-11, 13-14

I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. (1)

The Lord upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down. (14)

Alleluia!

Second Reading: Romans 8: 9, 11-13

If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you. (11)

We believe that Christ lives in us, especially when we receive him in the Holy Eucharist. The same Lord Jesus Christ raises our mortal bodies, here and now! The healing of our physical ailments can be achieved through Christ in us! We need to repent and turn to him daily. Even our thought life is sanctified the moment we let Christ into our minds! We must lean into his promptings each time he whispers in our hearts! Every moment we will find a new reckoning and a new beginning. We thus will be raised in our spiritual and physical life every time we turn to the Son, just like the sunflower!

In Jesus’ name, Amen, Alleluia!

Gospel: Matthew 11: 25-30

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (29)

This sentence seems to hold the key to peaceful living and a life in the Spirit. But how must one live out this principle? It is not an easy task! When there is so much negativity around us, when there is falsehood being paraded and celebrated as good; following the precepts of Christ doesn’t come as a first choice! There is a certain urge to rectify all the wrong by voicing out or taking quick action. Sometimes it is imperative to do so. But we must also choose our battles. Humbly taking a step back, choosing silence, and taking time to sort one’s thoughts seem to bolster us against the ravages on our soul. It is in those moments that we must turn our gaze to the eyes of the Lord Saviour, who is walking alongside us in the storm. His hand on our shoulder and firm grip of our hand will help us tread upon those murky waters, in quite confidence! We can voice our opinion to Him, and watch the Lord of the Universe take control of the situation. After all, HE has the victory!

Amen, In Jesus’ name, Alleluia!

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Also Read: Mass Readings for 02 July 2023

First Reading: Second Kings 4: 8-11, 14-16

“Let us make a small roof chamber with walls, and put there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so that he can stay there whenever he comes to us.” (10)

The Shunammite woman was acknowledged for her generosity. She didn’t ask for anything in return yet the Lord saw what she needed. We thank the Lord for all his blessings on us each day. For the roof over our heads, food on the table, family, and friends; health, education and so much more, we praise the Good Lord for his generosity to us.

Alleluia, Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 89: 2-3, 16-19

I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever; with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations. I declare that your steadfast love is established forever; your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens. (1-2)

Alleluia!

Second Reading: Romans 6: 3-4, 8-11

But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. (8)

So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. (11)

Christ lives to the Father, “the life he lives, he lives to God.” (10) Therefore, we must have no fear! Christ lives a triumphant life in God, and we are partakers of his life.

Amen, Alleluia!

Gospel: Matthew 10: 37-42

“Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous.” (41)

In an increasingly deceptive and divisive world, we ought to discern the wolves in sheep’s clothing. Today, there is an inordinately large number of people preaching and proclaiming themselves “pastors” or “brothers”. We ought to ask the Holy Spirit for discernment. One way to spot the wolf can be by observing their works. Because faith is what faith does! Deeds must bear the fruit of their words. “Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous.” (Jas 1:22) Also, Christ laid down this measure for himself!! “Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves.” (Jn 14:11)

Then, we now have a clear yardstick of our lives and be able to stay clear of the wolves!

In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen!

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Also Read: Mass Readings for 25 June 2023

First Reading: Jeremiah 20: 10-13

Our Commanding Officer!

But the Lord is with me like a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble, and they will not prevail. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal dishonor

will never be forgotten. (11)

Praise the Lord GOD of hosts, he never abandons his people. We must stand firm when there is darkness around us because the LORD is our Light, he will not let us stumble. As proclaimed in Deut. 31:6 “Be strong and bold, have no fear or dread of them, for it is the LORD who goes with you, He will not fail you or forsake you.”

In JESUS’ name. Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 69: 8-10, 14, 17, 33-35

The Code of Conduct!

When I humbled my soul with fasting, they insulted me for doing so. (10)

For God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah; and his servants shall live there and possess it; the children of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall live in it. (35-36)

Amen, Alleluia, Amen!

Second Reading: Romans 5: 12-15

The Secret Passage!

But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man’s trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. (15)

For a more relevant understanding of the passage, we look at the NLT Bible version which presents this verse: “But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. The sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ.”

In Jesus Christ, we are free to enter into the presence of God Abba Father. But have we been washed in the blood of the Lamb? Repentance is the road to this cleansing. Are we ready to accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Saviour?

May the Holy Spirit guide us to all truth. Amen!

Gospel: Matthew 10: 26-33

Onwards to Victory!

“So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known.” (26)

“Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven.” (32)

Alleluia, Amen! We have a great and mighty God! He watches our every move and thought and yet he is bountiful in mercy! Jesus gives us clear instructions about witnessing to our faith, it is a command – not to be fearful! The promise at the other end of the command is that we will be recognized in His presence. This is a promise not only for the end times but also for the here and now!

The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are present right here in our midst. When we receive Christ in the Holy Eucharist and remain humble children of God, HE resides in us. Where one of the Adorable persons of the Holy Trinity abides, there, the other two adorable persons of the Holy Trinity also abide. When we call on Jesus he sends us the Holy Spirit, then they both in turn lead us to God Our Father! Amen!

Let us learn to live in the presence of the Holy Trinity One GOD daily! In JESUS’ name, Amen, Alleluia, Amen!

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Also Read: Mass Readings for 18 June 2023

First Reading: Exodus 19: 2-6

“Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.” (5-6)

The LORD GOD has blessed us in so many ways. He teaches us every day, but we must be attentive to his every word. We must remember our promises to GOD! All the sacraments that we have received are our commitments to GOD. The Lord has taught us through the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes in the new testament. He calls us out to be a holy and priestly people, we know we are set apart. Therefore, let us rejoice and walk in his covenant. Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 100: 1-3, 5

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing. (1-3)

Alleluia!

Second Reading: Romans 5: 6-11

But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. (11)

Christ Jesus gives us a chance even as he did with Judas Iscariot at the last supper. When he offered the bread dipped in wine (Jn 13:27), Judas had the choice to receive reconciliation and change his evil intention. But sadly Judas rejected the offer and allows Satan entry into his heart. Refusing to repent is the open door for Satan to come and take control of our hearts and intentions. Living in the presence of GOD himself for three years didn’t deter Judas from betraying him!

God in his infinite love and mercy, has left us the choice; he will not override our free will! We still have the choice to reject or accept GOD! May we look to St. Peter to help us on our way because he repented he went on to live for the LORD GOD!

Amen!

Gospel: Matthew 9: 36 – 10: 8

Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. (1)

Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. (8)

Jesus Christ had given them all the same authority, Judas Iscariot too! Yet at the most critical time of his life, Judas did not exercise his God-given power! He willfully engaged with the evil lurking in his heart! May we learn to command our flesh in obedience to God’s will? God’s plans are best for us and we must submit our intentions to the Lord GOD Almighty.

Christ has commanded us to “cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons.” We must strive to do all of these first in our own hearts, then our families and the world. Our small efforts though unseen, unrecognized, or unappreciated; are seen by the Lord GOD himself. Our efforts are blessed in accordance with our faith and humility! May we exercise our God-given power and live fruitful and joyful lives.

In Jesus’ name, Amen!

The Body and Blood of Christ Solemnity

Also Read: Mass Readings for 11 June 2023

First Reading: Deuteronomy 8: 2-3, 14-16

Remember the long way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commandments. (2)

In our hunger and thirst, what do we decide to choose? When we remain humble we can request God to satisfy our every need. But often, we try to solve our problems through our own strength and power. It is this great snare that we find ourselves in when we have tried all the means offered by the world. No man-made mechanism can provide us the quenching still, sweet waters like those from the rock which God provides. Amen.

May the good Lord allow us to remember this wonderful truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 147: 12-15, 19-20

Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion! For he strengthens the bars of your gates; he blesses your children within you. (12-13)

Amen, The Lord is with us! He protects us from mighty persecutions, He safeguards his people like a shepherd guards his flock. Amen!

Second Reading: First Corinthians 10: 16-17

Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. (17)

Christ Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper. (Mt.26:26-28, Lk.22:14-20, Mk.14 :22-24, Jn. 13-17) At the Holy Eucharist, the Holy Spirit blesses the bread and wine and we receive Christ Jesus in person in our hearts. (CCC 1105, 1106) By the communion of the Holy Spirit, we form Christ’s body. (CCC 1108)

Only when the Holy Spirit grants us faith, we can be brought together in communion with our brothers and sisters. It is then that we are truly made one body, in Jesus’ name. Amen!

We ask the Lord GOD to grant us the eyes of faith, in JESUS’ name. Amen!

Gospel: John 6: 51-58

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (51)

For my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. (55)

To understand these words of Christ, we must listen to him with the ears of faith. His body and blood are nourishment for my soul and it is made real in the form of the bread that I can physically see and taste! GOD doesn’t get any more real than this! He is alive in us! Alleluia, Amen, Alleluia!

Praise You Lord GOD, the Almighty, He who was, who is, and who is to come. Amen!

Happy Feast of the Corpus Christi! Amen, Alleluia!

The Holy Trinity Solemnity

Also Read: Mass Readings for 04 June 2023

First Reading: Exodus 34: 4b-6, 8-9

And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped. (8)

May we realize today, that it is the Lord GOD Almighty whom we serve. We experience this only through the power of the Holy Spirit. The fear of the Lord is a charism of the Holy Spirit. A Holy Fear of the Lord GOD is a gift to us and once we receive it; we will tread this earth ever so reverently, knowing whose we are!

Amen, In Jesus’ name, Alleluia!

Responsorial Psalm: Daniel 3: 52-56

“Blessed are you, O Lord, God of our ancestors, and to be praised and highly exalted forever; And blessed is your glorious, holy name, and to be highly praised and highly exalted forever.” (52)

We call on you as adopted children of the Most Holy One Lord God The Almighty. Amen!

Second Reading: Second Corinthians 13: 11-13

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. (13)

Thank You O Lord GOD Almighty for these words; which we recite at the daily Holy Eucharistic celebration. Your words O Lord are true, perfect, and alive; they sanctify our spirit and soul.

Amen!

Gospel: John 3: 16-18

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. (16)

Christ Jesus taught us that Our God is a merciful Father. (Mt. 6:9) Here again, God’s boundless love and mercy for us, his creatures, is emphasized by Christ Jesus. We are greatly favored and highly blessed. May we respond to God’s love and mercy by living a life worthy of his mercy toward us.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Pentecost Solemnity

Also Read: Mass Readings for 28 May 2023

First Reading: Acts 2: 1-11

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. (1)

The apostles lived in unity and only in Unity, does the Holy Spirit come and dwell in us. Then, even when strangers speak in an unknown language; their meaning is understood! (8)

We ask the Lord to grant us this unity with him and among his children. Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 104: 1, 24, 29-31, 34

O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. (24)

When you send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the ground. (30)

Amen!

Second Reading: First Corinthians 12: 3b-7, 12-13

To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (7)

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. (12)

We the church of Christ are one but individually we possess the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We must remember that these gifts are for the common good and not our selfish gain. The more we work in communion with our brothers and sisters, the more we will actualize these gifts.

In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Gospel: John 20: 19-23

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” (19)

If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” (23)

On this Pentecost Sunday, Christ our Lord comes into our closed rooms (where we have retreated) to bring us Peace. The Peace he gives surpasses all human understanding, as it builds up our courage and joy. Like the apostles that day, let us rejoice in the Lord and His Works.

Jesus Christ also instituted the sacrament of reconciliation, that day. As soon as he had breathed on them, he commissions them to forgive sins. When there is repentance, we can receive and offer reconciliation.

In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Ascension of the Lord Solemnity (Seventh Sunday of Easter)

Also Read: Mass Readings for 21 May 2023

First Reading: Acts 1: 1-11

They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” (11)

Alleluia! Our Lord JESUS Christ has ascended into heaven, Amen! Christ promises the Holy Spirit and as we prepare for Pentecost Sunday, let us be ever so joyful and Thank the Good Lord!

Later, John writes in his vision of the revelation- Rev. 1:7 “Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen.” We know He is coming, we must be prepared. We ought to rekindle the Holy Spirit and yield to our Dear Counselor. In Jesus’ name Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 47: 2-3, 6-9

Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. (6)

God is king over the nations; God sits on his holy throne. The princes of the peoples gather as the people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God; he is highly exalted. (8-9)

Praise and Thanksgiving to Our Lord God must always be on our lips; it is a pleasing sacrifice to Him.

Alleluia!

Second Reading: Ephesians 1: 17-23

I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints. (17-18)

This must be our prayer today that we receive the wisdom and revelation that comes only from Our Father and Jesus Christ! When we truly contemplate what God, through Jesus Christ, has done for us, we will be in awe of his immense love for us. Being sinners, we still stand a chance to glorify Him eternally, face to face! Along with Mother Mary and all the great apostles and saints, we too shall see God the Abba Father, Jesus Christ, and The Holy Spirit Lord! Provided we have chosen to accept him, while we are here on earth. Then, we must repent. Without repentance, there is no redemption. Through our Advocates, Jesus and the Holy Spirit we have the courage to believe and be saved! Amen!

Gospel: Matthew 28: 16-20

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (18-20)

With this command, Christ commissioned his disciples to go out and baptize all nations. He also commissions us today, wherever we are in life, whatever position we have been placed in; we must be vigilant in fulfilling this great commission. We will be held responsible for the brothers, sisters, spouses, children, and friends entrusted to us! We have a mission in our area of dominion! Let us not be fearful, but with boldness take up this partnership with Our Lord Jesus Christ. Our Helper the Holy Spirit together with Christ is with us always. In Jesus’ name, Amen! Alleluia!

Happy Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord!
